| Well done!
You have completed a complex task in which you consulted with others,
used the Internet for investigations, practised and acquired new skills,
learnt from and taught your friends, and co-operatively planned, produced
and presented a useful product. In completing this task you have also gained
a better understanding of foods and prices and of the kinds of organization
involved in catering for a large group. . Wrap-Up Activities . Have a class discussion about the project - most difficult parts, most interesting parts, new things learnt, etc. .
If you are able
to use your catering plan or parts of it on a camp, discuss how well it
went - were people generally happy with the food choices? Did any unforeseen
difficulties arise?.
Discussion or debate
- Apart from financial considerations, are there any health or other reasons
to make your own cake rather than buy a ready-made one?Springboard to further discussions, debates and investigations . The world is currently experiencing a huge upsurge in an eye disease called macular degeneration. There is currently no cure for it and the end result is blindness. New research seems to show that the use of trans-fats (oils that are converted to solids such as in margarines) may be contributing to this upsurge. Trans-fats are used in nearly all commercial foods - pies, pastries, cakes etc and margarine is used by many people in their homes. . What you can find on the Internet about macular degeneration and the research done into its causes? What advice would you give to others based on your findings? . The industrialized nations of the world are experiencing a huge increase in obesity and diabeties in their populations, both among adults and children. This is related to poor diet and lack of exercise. Part of the blame lies in the huge quantity of sugar in soft drinks which many children, teenages and adults drink large amounts of daily. We also eat large amounts of refined carbohydrates (breads, pastries, donuts etc made with refined flours) which quickly break down to sugars in our blood. . Plan one day's meals using using entirely commercially-made food and drinks. Look at the nutritional advice on the labels of all the foods and drinks or check their nutritional contents on the Internet. Find out the total quantity of sugar that is in that day's meals. Work out the total kilojules that are in that day's meals. Work out the total price of that day's meals. ..
Discuss the results
of your investigation with others. |
