How We Teach
We are proud to lead the way in implementing the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM), to ensure every student receives high-quality education in a structured and engaging way.
What is the VTLM?
The VTLM is a research-based approach designed to support high-quality teaching and improved learning outcomes for students in Victorian schools. It ensures that teachers use evidence-based strategies to deliver lessons that are engaging, structured, and effective.
Key Features of the VTLM
High-Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS)
Teachers use High-Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) to enhance learning. These include:
- Explicit Teaching – Clear instructions and step-by-step explanations of new concepts.
- Questioning – Encouraging students to think deeply and ask questions.
- Feedback – Providing timely support to help students improve.
- Multiple Exposures – Revisiting key concepts to strengthen understanding.
These strategies ensure that every child gets the support they need to succeed.
The Practice Principles for Teaching and Learning
The VTLM is built on nine Practice Principles, which guide teachers in creating a positive and inclusive learning environment. Some key principles include:
- High expectations for all students – Encouraging every child to do their best.
- Challenging learning goals – Setting clear targets to motivate students.
- Student voice and agency – Allowing students to have a say in their learning.
The Pedagogical Model: How Lessons Are Structured
Teachers follow a five-step process to ensure learning is structured and effective:
- Engage – Connecting new learning with what students already know.
- Explore – Introducing and demonstrating new concepts.
- Explain – Providing clear explanations and examples.
- Elaborate – Giving students opportunities to apply their learning.
- Evaluate – Checking understanding and providing feedback.
This model ensures that students are supported at every stage of their learning journey.
The Learning Cycle: Supporting Every Student
The VTLM helps teachers understand where each student is in their learning and how to help them progress. Teachers use assessment tools, student feedback, and observations to tailor their approach to each child’s needs.

does this benefit your child?
- Clear and structured lessons to support deep learning.

- A focus on student voice to build confidence and independence
We are committed to helping every child succeed by using the best teaching methods available. The VTLM ensures that students feel supported, challenged and engaged in their learning.
